Stability analysis of left abutment of Latian dam by calculation of reliability coefficient using Monte Carlo method

Published in , 2010

Today, with the use of new methods in statistics and the application of those methods in engineering, stochastic analyzes along with deterministic analyzes have become popular. In stochastic analyzes in geotechnical engineering, the uncertainties of each parameter are considered in the analyzes. as a result, the reliability coefficient replaces the safety factor. To calculate the reliability coefficient, the mean and standard deviation are used. In this research, first, the steps of calculating the reliability coefficient using the Monte Carlo method are presented. Then, important uncertainties in the analysis of slope stability are discussed and the stability of the left abutment of Latian Dam, which had slide in 1984, is modeled. Then, the reliability coefficient of this slope has been calculated. This coefficient varies from 0.9 to 2.5 for different parameters. Finally, the effect of the uncertainties on the reliability coefficient is presented.
